Basics
Meet your keyboard
White keys, black keys, and how to find your way around.
2 min read
At first a piano looks like a wall of identical keys. The secret is the black keys — they sit in repeating groups of two and three. Once you see that pattern, the whole keyboard makes sense.
Find C
Look for any group of two black keys. The white key just to the left of them is C. That same shape repeats all the way up and down the keyboard.

Every highlighted key is a C — just left of each pair of black keys.
Tip: Play a few C’s up and down. Hear how they sound like the same note, only higher or lower?
