5 tips for two-hand coordination

How to get both hands working together without getting overwhelmed.

3 min read

Playing with both hands at the same time is one of the most exciting milestones in learning piano — but it can feel like patting your head and rubbing your stomach. Here are 5 practical rules to master it smoothly.

1. Hands separately first

Master each hand on its own until you do not have to think about fingerings or note names. If one hand is on autopilot, your brain only has to focus on coordinating them.

2. Drop the tempo in half

When putting hands together for the first time, play at half or even one-third speed. Slowness gives your brain time to anticipate the next simultaneous movement.

3. Find the "together" moments

Identify exactly which notes happen at the exact same instant in both hands. Lock those moments in first, then fill in the notes in between.

Tip: Practise just two measures at a time. Perfecting a tiny chunk feels rewarding and builds solid muscle memory.
